The European Union supports the Black Sea submarine cable project, which is a huge investment and hopefully will significantly change the power generation and also the electricity transmission between the South Caucasus and the European Union. Such a statement made the Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia at the quadrilateral meeting of Georgia, Romania, Azerbaijan and Hungary regarding the Black Sea submarine cable project.

“The Black Sea cable is a very big project that connects, on the one hand, Georgia and Azerbaijan, on the other hand, Romania and Hungary. The EU supports this project and participates in it as an observer. We are talking about a huge investment that will hopefully significantly change electricity generation and also electricity transmission between the South Caucasus and the EU.

The European Union strongly supports this project and we want this project to have a regional scale. We sincerely hope that in a few years the South Caucasus will become a very important source of energy for the European Union. It will take some time, because we are talking about a huge project, but we would like it to be implemented as soon as possible”, - said Pawel Herczynski.

At the meeting, Georgian officials shared the first results of the feasibility study of the project and discussed the next stages of its implementation with their counterparts. Economy Minister said additional studies were required this year in order to have a “complete picture” of how the project should be implemented.

“It is very important to coordinate at a high level between the countries in order for the project to be effectively implemented”, - added Levan Davitashvili.

Peter Szijjártó, the Hungarian Minister of Trade and Foreign Affairs, said his country was interested in energy diversification to ensure “security of supply and green, environmentally friendly solutions”.

“We really appreciate Georgia"s ambitious approach to the implementation of this project [and] we are ready to participate in the feasibility study. We hope that our Georgian friends will be able to fulfil the plan of providing a record-breaking, almost 1,200 km long submarine cable”, - he said.
