Shota Tkeshelashvili has been unanimously elected as the new chairman of the Prosecutorial Council - he was supported by all 15 members of the Council.

Tkeshelashvili was the only candidate for this post.

His candidacy was submitted by the prosecutor member of the Council, Aleksandre Mukasashvili.

Tkeshelashvili held various positions at the Prosecutor’s Office since 2007. Since May 2020, he has served as the Deputy Prosecutor of Tbilisi.

The Council, which is also responsible for conducting disciplinary proceedings against deputies of the Prosecutor General, was earlier subordinated to the Justice Ministry, before the country’s new constitution made it an independent body directly accountable to the Parliament in 2018.

The Prosecutorial Council consists of 15 members elected in accordance with the organic law.

The Chairman of the Prosecutorial Council is elected by the Prosecutorial Council for a term of 2 years.

Until now, the position of the Chairman of the Council was held by the Deputy Prosecutor of Tbilisi, Merab Jeranashvili.
