May 26 - Georgia marks its Independence Day

On 26 May, Georgia celebrates its Independence Day. In 1918 the Act of Independence laid the foundation for the First Democratic Republic of Georgia.

Georgia’s independence was recognized by leading European states. Independent Georgia ceased to exist after Soviet Russia occupied it. Georgia managed to regain its independence after 70 years, on 9 April 1991.

The event dedicated to the Independence Day of Georgia will start at 11:00 on Rustaveli Avenue and will be broadcast live. Georgian top officials will deliver a speech following the ceremony.

Military oath-taking ceremonies will be held in Tbilisi and other cities - the conscripts will take the oath simultaneously throughout Georgia.
