German public sector workers launched a strike, demanding better pay in response to rising prices. The inflation rate in Germany has risen sharply and reached a record high of 7.9% in 2022.
German services sector trade union Verdi demands a 10.5% pay increase, or at least 500 euros, for some 2.5 million public sector workers.
In addition, Germany has provided aid to Ukraine and set up a special defense fund of 100 billion euros, which has also agitated the public.
The strike has disrupted life in parts of Germany, as public transport, medical and sanitation systems are affected. The next round of salary negotiations is scheduled for February 22 and 23 in the city of Potsdam.
