The foreign ministers of 27 EU countries do not recognize the results of the elections in Belarus. Besides, European Union foreign ministers said at today’s meeting in Berlin that they have agreed to impose sanctions on up to 20 senior Belarusian officials who are suspected of being involved in election fraud and a brutal police crackdown against protesters since the country’s disputed August 9 presidential election.

The EU foreign ministers said Alexandr Lukashenko is likely at some point to be among those named on the sanctions list.

Meanwhile, the OSCE offered on August 28 to mediate between Lukashenko’s government and opposition leaders who charge that the presidential election was rigged in favor of Lukashenko.
