A grenade blast during a rally in Karachi has injured at least 39 people. Two unidentified assailants on a motorcycle threw a grenade at the crowd before fleeing the vicinity of the gathering, which was occurring near the Bait-ul-Mukarram Masjid in the Gulshan-i-Iqbal area of the city.
One person is in critical condition, and whilst others were taken to hospital for treatment, most victims sustained minor injuries. Police arrived at the scene of the attack and cordoned off the area while investigations take place.
The Sindhudesh Revolutionary Army later claimed responsibility for the attack on social media. The rally was part of a series of nationwide events held to commemorate Youm-i-Istehsal, the anniversary of the Indian government"s revocation of Jammu and Kashmir"s special status.
