“Congratulations to Georgia on 9 April, celebrating its restoration of independence and commemorating those who tragically lost their lives standing up to Soviet troops on this day in 1989.  Their sacrifice will never be forgotten”, - tweeted Carl Hartzell.

31 years passed since April 9 Tragedy in Tbilisi when an anti-Soviet demonstration was dispersed by the Soviet Army, resulting in 21 deaths and hundreds of injuries. April 9 is now remembered as the Day of National Unity.
